Lech and Zurs are the most fashionable resorts in Austria and regularly pull the rich and famous in through their doors throughout the season. However, a holiday here need not cost you an arm and a leg as there are chalets and reasonably priced hotels that you can book. Lech is a charming old farming village set high in the valley. The village is picturesque and is made up of chalet style hotels with a bubbling river running through. Lech and Zurs are just 4Km apart and are linked up by a regular bus service that takes about 10 mins to travel between resorts. Lech is a lot smaller than Zurs and offers some excellent hotels that will not disappoint.
At Oberlech the umbrella bar of the Burg hotel can be popular as well as the champagne bar in Hotel Montana. The outdoor bars in Lech are popular and the discos in some of the hotels liven up later on. Zug also makes for a good night out where you can get there by sleigh, have a meal and then drinks at the Vinothek wine bar. In Zurs the après ski is a lot quieter as the village is so much smaller. However, you will find a few good bars and a disco in the Edelweiss hotel and a piano bar for something a little more sedate. Off the slopes, Strolz’s emporium is the main attraction and it has a champagne bar which is always a bonus! Pedestrian’s can easily meet up with friends for lunch on the mountain in Oberlech or Zug. There are walking paths that are well marked out and a floodlit sledging run from Oberlech into town which is popular.
Lech and Zurs boast a vast high altitude domain of over 250Km of piste. Beginners will find gentle nursery slopes beside both Lech and Zurs where the long, wide groomed runs are the order of the day. Intermediates will find a fantastic amount of terrain to play with. The pistes in the Oberlech area above Lech are ideal for taking on the cruisy blues as they are usually immaculately groomed so no surprises to look out for.
Stronger intermediates will want to do the circuit to Zurs and back. With their amazing ski in/ski out locations and the huge variety of blue and red runs the resorts of Lech and Zurs will not disappoint any intermediate.
For experts the main attraction is the off piste. There is so much to take from the area if you hire a guide as they will take you to the best locations that haven’t been tracked out.
A visit to St Anton is also a must for good skiers and boarders as the pistes are more challenging and again the guide will be able to show you some fantastic off piste. Cross country skiers will find 19Km of trails from the centre of Lech leading through the valley to Zug and back. In Zurs there is a 4Km track to the Flexen Pass and back.
