Mayrhofen ticks all the boxes in most people’s ski holidays expectations. There is a huge amount of varied skiing and boarding on offer along with a lively party atmosphere in the evening.
Located in the Ziller valley Mayrhofen has access to a total of 630Kms of piste. Most shops, bars and restaurants are located on the long main street with the hotels and chalets spread over a wider area. The main lift to the main Penken area of the slopes is located at one end of the street with the cable car to the Ahorn sector 200m along the road.
At the end of the day, you can enjoy a drink at the Umbrella Bar at the top of the Penken gondola. This bar offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and is a great place to unwind after a long day of skiing.
If you’re looking for something a little more lively, head down to the village and check out the Ice Bar at the Hotel Strass or Nicki’s Schirmbar at the Bruke Hotel. These bars are both known for their lively atmosphere and their delicious cocktails.
In the evening, there are a variety of live music and dancing options to choose from. You can also stay the night at the White Lounge ice-hotel at the top of the Ahorn gondola for a truly unique experience.
The larger of Mayrhofen’s two areas is the Penken that is accessed by gondola from town. The Ahorn area is the second area of Mayrhofen and this is more suited to beginners as it is high, extensive and sunny. The Ziller valley is an intermediate’s paradise with 630Kms of piste to play on. There is a huge variety of terrain from the Hintertux glacier to the large network of pistes at Hochzillertal/Hochfugen. There are some lovely long runs on Rastkogel that will be ideal for keen piste-bashers. For those who want to travel around, each of the main mountains covered by the Ziller pass is large and varied.
More advanced skiers and boarders will love the Harakiri as this is Austria’s steepest piste which sits at a gradient of 78%. The black run under the Horburg is a good fast blast when it is groomed. Book a guide and head off piste to find the untracked powder and exciting descents that are on offer. Cross country skiers will find 20Kms of trails along the valley to Zell im Zillertal and some small loops close to the village. For boarders and skiers that enjoy the terrain parks, there is one of the finest to be found in the Alps in Mayrhofen on Penken. Every year there are more combinations of kinked, curved and flat boxes and rails for all standards.
