Igls is a small resort with a big sporting history, hosting events at two winter Olympics. It isn’t just for the pros though – learners can get going on gentle nursery slopes by the village and higher up there are wide-open pistes with amazing city views. There aren’t heaps of runs here, so once you’ve ticked them all off, ride the twice-weekly ski bus to the nearby Stubai glacier for 100km of high-altitude skiing.
Known for its thermal springs since the middle ages, the Igls hasn’t changed much over the years. Cobbled streets wind past timber-framed houses and a Gothic church sits in the centre. There aren’t many hotels here, but standard is top-notch – think luxurious wellness areas and restaurants dishing up delicious regional cuisine. Add in the village’s peaceful atmosphere, and it’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
If you fancy venturing further afield, Innsbruck’s an easy tram ride away. Or stay closer to home to experience Austria’s only bobsleigh track – climb aboard with a professional pilot and feel the G-force as you speed down at 120km/h.
Igls’s 18km Patscherkofel ski area packs a punch, having hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. The gentle terrain next to the village is great for first-timers, and experienced skiers can tackle parts of the old Olympic downhill run. Eager for more? Check out Stubai glacier for over 100km of piste, which you can reach using the free ski bus on Tuesdays and Fridays – or pop down to Innsbruck to catch the public bus on other days.
