Avoriaz is a purpose built ski resort that is traffic free and built on top of a magnificent sheer drop of cliffs
With plenty of ski apartments and a few ski chalets and hotels to choose from it is a great choice for your ski holiday. Avoriaz is characterised by bold modern architecture where the designer wanted the buildings to blend in with the surrounding area. You either love it or hate it and we love it!
As it is traffic free snowcats and horse drawn carriages will transport people from the car parks to apartments. Wherever you stay you will be close to a lift or slope as it is a compact resort. It has quite an alpine feel to the town as the paths and pistes surrounding your accommodation are usually covered in snow.
There are a few bars that have a lively atmosphere especially when everyone is coming off the slopes. The Yeti and Tavaillon are popular and to dance late on into the night the Place is worth a visit. Off the slopes there is a fitness centre with saunas and hot tubs.
The Portes du Soleil is one of the largest lift linked areas in the world and Avoriaz has a fantastic location to take advantage of this. Ski up to the Chavanette sector on the Swiss border and have a coffee at the top before tackling the notorious Swiss Wall.
If it is very icy it is good to traverse along to the left to access softer snow as one fall in the ice will take you to the bottom! You are then skiing in Switzerland and can get over to Les Crosets and Champoussin. If you take the lift through the village of Avoriaz you can ski down to Lindaret through the trees.
There is a natural snowboard park called The Stash that is good fun on skis as well as boards for some freestyle fun. Avoriaz leads the way for snowboard parks as it also has a pro park that is used in high profile competitions. Beginners and intermediates will enjoy the La Chapelle Park and there is a super pipe at Prodains.
Beginners will enjoy the sunny slopes that are convenient to Avoriaz. Intermediates will think they are in paradise as they will be able to ski the whole of the Portes du Soleil. Lindarets is lovely to ski through the trees and the restaurants in the goats village are excellent. Experts will enjoy the Swiss wall, Chatel and the black runs off Moissettes. Take a guide and they will show you the best off piste areas and some truly fantastic views. Cross country skiers will find varied terrain with about 28 miles of trails.
