Val Thorens is Europe’s highest resort set in a magnificent ski bowl with pistes running out in all directions. Ski chalets, apartments and hotels are all avaialble to book for those perfect Val Thorens ski holidays. Most visitors’ cars are kept in car parks as it is just the worker’s cars that are allowed in resort during the week. Val Thorens is a classic purpose built resort with plenty of convenient slope side accommodation. It is a compact village with everything in walking distance. Many of the shops and restaurants are clustered around the heart of the village at the Place de Caron. The upper half of the village is centred on the Place de Peclet where most of the new apartments have been built. The lower half of the village has the large Pierre & Vacances apartments.
The Frog and Roast Beef is an old favourite or try the Red Fox up at the Balcons. For live music go to the Malaysia cellar bar. Off the slopes there is a good sports centre with swimming pool, saunas, steam room, hot tubs, gym etc. There is also a leisure centre with bowling lanes and pool tables. Free weekly concerts are held in the church and there is also a small cinema. Don’t forget the twice weekly market. There is also a toboggan run which can be fun if you are having a bad visibility day.
Val Thorens has excellent snow conditions throughout the season making it a fantastic place to learn to ski and board. As it is part of the magnificent Trois Valleys you have access to one of the largest ski areas in the world with 600Km of piste to play on. Beginners will be able to learn on the nursery slopes at the foot of the slopes so nice and close to the restaurants if an early lunch is needed. Intermediates will just love the enormous amount of skiing and boarding that is on offer to them. Val Thorens has some of the best intermediate runs in the region and the excellent snow conditions makes it easier to tackle those harder red runs or blacks. Good intermediates should try the Cime de Caron for an adventure as it is great fun when just groomed. For experts there is a phenomenal amount of off piste to explore so hire a guide and go for it.
