Selva/Val Gardena is located in the heart of the amazing Dolomites. It is one of the main bases to consider when thinking of a visit to the Sella Ronda region. Selva enjoys a fantastic setting under the stunning pink tinged walls of Sassolungo and the Gruppo Sella. The area is renowned for its World Cup ski races but it is neither too upmarket or in your face. It is a good value, civilised family friendly resort. This area was part of Austria for many years and it still holds a certain Tirolean charm with German being the main language and not Italian. Gondolas rise is two directions from the village giving access to the Sella Ronda route. Hotels, apartments and chalet hotels are available to book for those perfect ski holidays in Italy.
Nightlife in Selva is lively and informal. La Stua is an après ski bar on the Sella Ronda route that has live music on some nights. The Piz Seteur bar above Plan de Gralba is also worth a visit on your way home. After dinner head to the Laurinkeller or the Luislkeller. There is also an Irish bar which will always be fun. For late night dancing head to Dali. Off the slopes there is a sports centre, snowshoeing or plenty of walks. There are also tobogganing and sleigh rides on Alpe de Siusi. Pedestrians can reach numerous good restaurants by gondola or cable car.
Selva gives access to the Sella Ronda which has a 26Km circular tour of well groomed pistes and modern efficient lift systems. Beginners will find the village nursery slopes beneath the Dantercepies gondola to be the best as they are spacious, convenient and kept in good condition. There are also plenty of long runs to progress to. Intermediates will just keep smiling and smiling as there are 175Km of piste to play on throughout the Sella Ronda area.
Competent intermediates will love the red and black descents from Dantercepies and Ciampinoi to Selva. The gentle blue runs in the Plan de Gralba are great for stretching the legs on. Selva/Val Gardena offers some good challenging off-piste routes due to the terrain of the area but please hire a guide to do this. The Val Gardena World Cup piste, the Saslong, is one of several steepish runs and is kept in racing condition for Italian team practises. Selva/ValGardena has something up its sleeve for all standards of boarders.
Freeriders should check out the windlips that are natural banks and trees that areas like Pordoi have to offer.
